One of the great things of belonging to a network like the Computer Troubleshooters network is the shared knowledge, and experiences. We recent had a conversation about customers’ misconceptions about PCs! Yes we all have ideas about Computers, based on thing we’ve heard or believed we’ve read.
Anyway here is 32 of the ones I thought I would share with you today..enjoy courtesy of Computer Troubleshooters!
- Anti-virus software is all I need for protection on my PC.
- Buying a new £400 PC will make my Limewire downloads much faster.
- Defragging my PC will remove any viruses and spyware on my machine.
- The internet is just a bunch of web pages really.
- My power strip is a “surge protector” actually.
- Hard drives never fail, especially on a new PC.
- Wireless (802.11x) will work anywhere and everywhere, including at 85 MPH on the motorway 100 miles from the nearest anything.
- 2 antivirus programs are better than 1!
- Defrag - cleans up the drives and saves space.
- My external hard drive is more reliable than the drive inside my computer.
- My computer should work like the blender on my kitchen counter.
- My 5 year old Anti-Virus program, never set up or updated, will protect me from the “baddies” out there.
- I am not breaking the law by downloading the music; it is the people who are uploading it who are breaking the law.
- My wireless router says 54 Mbps, so I should be downloading from DSL connection at 54 Mbps.
- I need at least 1 gig of memory so I can store my music without slowing down my computer.
- I don’t need a license for software products.
- You can upgrade any computer to XP/Vista
- If I just turn it off for a few days, weeks, months it will fix itself.
- My warranty covers everything. Including software, dropping it, even hitting it with a sledgehammer etc.
- Everything on the internet is true.
- I trust my kid/kids on the internet.
- I could’ve bought a new PC for the amount of that repair bill! (Yes…and in no time you’ll have it just as screwed up as this one! )
- A larger hard drive will make my computer faster.
- A computer will go slow if there are too many files on the hard disk.
- A computer will slow down based on the number of links on the desktop.
- The tower is actually called the CPU, Hard Drive …
- If something doesn’t work, repeat it a dozen times because it is bound to eventually work.
- My favourite is the user that has used 20Gb of a 40Gb hard drive calling to ensure that their new computer has a large enough hard drive.
- I backup my data every week. (Yeah right).
- My receptionist does the backup everyday and takes the tapes offsite for me.
- I have tested my backups.
- Vista will run on a laptop with 256MB memory
